Weeton Show Pony Clinic: How to prepare yourself and your pony for a show was held at Almscliffe Village Hall on Friday 6th March. Guests, some of whom were relatively new to the showing world, were treated to an informative and humour filled talk by one the country’s leading show pony breeders and producers, Kim Money. She was however nearly upstaged by the on-set presence of the pony Mini (Milford Fair Minuet) owned by Lisa Walmsley) who made a foot sure entrance into the hall to the delight of the audience. Mini made the utmost of her starring role taking an avid interest in equine dentist Sam Norris when she gave a detailed explanation of the horse dental formation and calmly allowed Chartered Physio Jill Hall to demonstrate the potential problem areas of a horse’s back.
Kim explained to the guests the best way, along with some of the pitfalls, to get your horse or pony ready for a show, at whatever level. In addition to tips on how to prepare the horse, she also detailed the dress code for riders, ably assisted by Emily Walmsley who modelled the correct clothing and turnout – it’s just as important to have tidy hair on the rider as well as the pony. Kim took questions throughout the talk with Mini playing to the crowd at opportune moments. In fact at one point it looked as if she might sit herself down on a chair, rest her head on a hoof and watch the accompanying slide show.
Afterwards guests were able to chat to Kim, Jill and Sam about their showing experiences and everyone agreed it had been a great opportunity to learn more about the showing world.
We are delighted that 2014 was one of our best attended in recent years - allowing us to not only invest in an even better show for 2015, but also provide substantial support to important local charities. At our AGM in November, we agreed to donate £1,500 to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and make a significant financial pledge to renovation works at Almscliffe Hall.
You may remember one of the changes we made last year was to create the opportunity to become a Member of the Show. For £30 you get priority access to the show and know you are making a valuable contribution to a great local tradition. Surely the perfect Christmas present for the local friend or relative who is hard to buy for! For full details see our website.
And finally… do look ahead to our key dates for next year:
• Our annual Dinner Dance at Almscliffe Hall will take place on Saturday 14th March. A great evening of food, entertainment and dancing. Start organising your tables now! All welcome. We will have full details in the next Parish News and on our website.
• Show weekend is all set for 24 - 26 July 2015, with the traditional Hog Roast on Friday night and of course the main event on Sunday.
A big thank you to everyone who has supported the show during 2014 .
